Three of the many great unknowns that our current scientific community has relatively little to say conclusively about are consciousness, the self, and healing. 
Recent neuroscientific research has not supported any great conclusions on these fundamentally close and meaningful phenomena of human experience. 

Research on meditation in advanced meditators, beginners learning mindfulness meditation to address symptoms of depression & anxiety, and research with the psychedelic drug psilocybin in combination with very brief mindfulness instruction in healthy volunteers, can give some clues.
